This History reads like a myth. Byrd's "achievement" has been shown now by scholars, navigators and airmen to have been a hoax. It was highly questionable and unverified at the time and the likes of Bennet and Balchen reluctantly kept the hoax secret. Bennet died shortly thereafter and Balchen, although his expertise then and later allowed Bryd to accomplish much , was professionally sabotaged at many opportunities by Bryd and his "machine" Balchen and Ammundsen's stories are worthy. Byrd's later accomplishments rode on the shoulders of his great hoax. From all this intrigue (which continues) about Bryd I wonder what his true nature was......

My father, Capt Patrick J. Gaffney, USNR Ret. flew over the North Pole in 1946-1948 for a military exercise to prove the ability of American bombers flying over the Pole to reach Russia.. Then, Admiral Richard E. Byrd was supervising. My dad was the lead navigator. They flew from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The family has lost the pictures he had and my father is deceased.
I have been unable to find any information on these missions.
