Its great to see that such a sad but historic event is still honored today. It is true that many men, women and children lost their lives in this terrible accident. But as history shows us, there is an honor, a valiant effort and a self-sacrificing chapter to this very unfortunate event.

The men aboard this ship bravely sacrificed their lives to save the lives of others and it is great that this is still honored today 101 years after the fact. These brave men have not been forgotten and great societies such as these will not let us forget their valiant efforts and sacrifice.

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for your comment. The memorial has strange nomenclature in that it's called "the Women's Titanic Memorial" but it is actually a memorial to the MEN of the Titanic who gave their lives so women and children, the first in the lifeboats, could live. It could have just as easily been called the "Men's Titanic Memorial" since it's memorializing the men. But it's called the Women's Titanic Memorial because women conceived of it, designed it, raised money for it, etc. Ms. Gurley-Kane was objecting to the fact that the men were being celebrated when so many women also gave their lives and sacrificed greatly. And her argument was that men should be protecting women just as a matter of their manhood, and was therefore not worthy of a special monument. Anyway, the gender divisions continue in that the Men's Titanic Society, which celebrates the memorial every April 15, is a men-only organization. Thanks again for the comment!

I don't quite understand this part:

"Philanthropist Evelyn Gurley-Kane wrote a letter to the The Washington Post in 1914 stating that a memorial only to men was
a "strange affront to … the women..."

What was Ms. Gurley-Kane complaining about exactly? Was this not to be a memorial to the Women of the Titanic from the beginning?

more women could be saved. Wow.
