very biased article, based on German view of the war. Soviet atrocities in fact were much lesser threat to civilians than it is presented by Germans. In fact Soviet leadership strictly forbade that in number of orders to troops in total contrast to Hitler who actually called for extermination of slaves.
Gen. Konev never went to obscurity, rising in ranks in Soviet military and eventually became the Supreme Commander of Warsaw Pact armies. In fact, the capture of Berlin was a stunning success even though the initial fighting at Oder river was extremely difficult and Seelow hights actually remained in Nazi hands. However, after penetrating German defense line the soviets managed to kill and capture the bulk of enemy forces, preventing their retreat to Berlin. As a result city was defended by beaten remnants of 9th army, police and Folksturm. This could not resist regular Soviet Army and city fell in just 10 days.
