August 25, 1940. On Aug. 24, the Luftwaffe dropped bombs on the interior of London, probably while trying to hit the docks. In retaliation, 70 RAF bombers struck Berlin. Damage was slight and no Germans were killed, but the raid disproved Hermann Goering’s boast that the German capital couldn’t be bombed.
