Mr. Potato Head. Invented by George Lerner in 1952, the original Mr. Potato Head toy was a set of plastic body parts and accessories designed to be pushed into a real potato. Television advertising helped sell over $4 million worth of the plastic parts in the toy’s first year. Due to complaints and new government safety rules, in 1964 Hasbro introduced the plastic potato body to the toy.
