Coffee. Coffee is not native to the Pacific region, but coffee does require a wet and warm climate to grow, making the Hawaiian Islands ideal for its cultivation. De Paula Marin’s plantation failed. In 1828, American missionary Rev. Samuel Ruggles established the first successful coffee plantation on the islands at Kona. Whether Marin’s coffee plants were the first in Hawaii is a matter of some debate.
