Sioux. Bonnin – her Sioux name was Zitkala-sa (Red Bird) – was secretary of the Society of American Indians. Also, because of her influence, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs established an Indian Welfare Committee, which studied the federal government’s treatment of each tribe. Born on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota in 1876, she died in 1938.
