Train engineer. On the night of April 29-30, 1900, Casey Jones stayed at his post when he saw a wreck was inevitable near Vaughn, Mississippi. Found dead with one hand on the throttle and other on the air brake lever, he was credited with preventing much loss of life; however, a formal investigation found him "solely responsible for the accident" for not responding to flag signals.
