On August 18, 1868, French astronomer Pierre Jules Janssen discovered this gas.
Helium. While observing a solar eclipse, Janssen noticed in his spectral analysis a line with a wavelength of 587.49 nanometers, never seen before. The gas is abundant in the universe, but rare on earth.
