Constantinople. The Fourth Crusade, like all the Crusades, was aimed at recapturing Jerusalem from the Muslims. However, the Crusader army was soon drawn into a conflict between Venice and the Byzantine Empire. In payment for being transported to the Holy Land, the Crusaders agreed to assault Constantinople, which they did successfully and then subjected the great city to a three-day pillage.
