Rugby Colony in Tennessee. Hughes, a member of Parliament and an author whose book Tom Brown»s School Days brought about education reform in England, established the colony chiefly to provide land for younger sons of British gentry (only the oldest son receives an inheritance). English gentry were uniquely unsuited to the Tennessee wilderness, and the colony failed.
