Elijah Lovejoy. Although he published his anti-slavery newspaper in the free state of Illinois, his printing press was destroyed four times by pro-slavery forces. The fourth time it was destroyed, Lovejoy was killed, a martyr for abolition and the freedom of the press. His funeral occurred on his 35th birthday. No one was ever held responsible for his murder.
