Caroline Herschel. Sister to famed astronomer William Herschel, she was an accomplished scientist in her own right. She discovered several comets and nebulas. In 1782 when William was appointed King’s Astronomer, he hired Caroline as his assistant; she received a salary of 50 pounds a year.
