    Robert Kapanjie says:

A grim choice presented itself to the allies at that moment. One was to abandon the city to the Soviets, another was to militaril;y fight to clear an overland passage to Berlin, thereby risking atomic war. The third advocated by Harry Truman was to supply Berlin by air. This latter choice of course was the one adopted. For a good book on the subject of these early coldwar warriers read The Candy Bombers.
