Brooklyn Bridge, begun in 1869 and completed in 1883. While directly overseeing construction of the bridge’s underwater caissons, Washington Roebling was permanently paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the bends. Using binoculars, he watched the progress from his home. His wife, Emily, who had worked at his side, unofficially took over many of his duties to see the job to completion.
