Educator. In 1869, Sanford became one of the first women to teach at a college when she joined the faculty of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. Later, she would teach for 29 years at the University of Minnesota where she introduced innovative teaching methods and became a full professor of rhetoric and elocution.
