Joan of Arc was sentenced to death as a heretic because of this.
Calling herself a saint
Cross-dressing
Blasphemy against the Pope
Reporting visions of angels
Cross-dressing. After an earlier conviction on heresy – based in part on wearing men’s clothing – she signed a retraction and was spared execution. However, in violation of their own law, the English had the imprisoned Joan guarded by male soldiers rather than nuns. Perhaps as a protection against rape, she again donned her soldier’s uniform, a tunic and pants tied tightly together with two dozen cords. This was denounced as a relapse into heresy, and she was burned at the stake.
