B-29. During a test flight on Feb. 18, 1943, an engine of the XB-29 prototype caught fire. The pilot, crew, and 19 others on the ground were killed. The manufacturer, Boeing, decided the craft had "too many problems," and they would not manufacture it. When Gen. Henry "Hap" Arnold threatened to make Boeing repay $200 million they’d received to build the plane, the company relented but said they would not take any responsibility for it. The result was a plane much advanced over others of its period.
