Mother’s Day. Two years after her mother’s death on May 9, 1905, Jarvis who was born in Webster, West Virginia, began a one-woman crusade to establish a national Mother’s Day. She was successful in 1911 when President Woodrow Wilson established Mother’s Day as a national holiday to be observed the second Sunday in May.
