American Revolutionary War. The Turtle, designed by David Bushnell, was a one-man sub intended to sink British warships by using an auger to attach a 100-pound time bomb to the underside of their hulls. The Turtle, or American Turtle, attempted to sink the 64-gun HMS Eagle in New York Harbor, but the auger failed to penetrate the hull. The sub was later sunk while being transported on a sailboat.
