USS Maddox. The WWII-era destroyer was collecting intelligence when it was attacked by three North Vietnamese motor torpedo boats on Aug. 2, 1964. It returned to the area the next day, accompanied by the newer destroyer Turner Joy. That night, the two ships reported being attacked, though whether they were is a matter of long debate.
