Gold. On Apr. 5, 1933, it became illegal for Americans to possess gold, with a few exceptions. Privately owned gold had to be sold to the government for $20.67 an ounce. The controversial move was made to prevent citizens from turning in their dollars for gold. Roosevelt also had the government buy gold on the open market, hoping to drive up inflation and put more money into circulation.
