Portugal. Known as the Lisbon earthquake, it is believed to have approached a magnitude of 9 on the Richter scale and ranks among the deadliest earthquakes in history. The quake struck around 9:20 a.m. and lasted up to six minutes. The Atlantic’s waters rushed out to sea, returning after some time as a giant tsunami.
