Four battles were fought for this city in China during World War II.
Changsha
Peking
Shanghai
Shantung
Nanking
Changsha contained an important rail junction. Chinese and Japanese troops fought for possession of it in 1939, 1941, 1942 and 1944. When the Japanese were forced back in first battle, it marked the first time they had been denied an important city and gave Chinese morale a badly needed boost.
