The ANZUS Treaty was intended to combat the spread of communism in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The name refers to the countries that made the pact in 1951: Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. The treaty began to unravel in 1984 when New Zealand declared itself a nuclear-free zone.
