A secret deal known as the Wormley Bargain settled this.

1921 Irish uprising
Second Boer War
The 1876 contested presidential election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden. Reportedly, Southern Democrats agreed to accept Hayes; in exchange U.S. troops would be removed from Southern states and a railroad developed between Dixie and the West Coast. The agreement, which is still clouded by denials, was named for the Wormley Hotel in Washington, D.C. where negotiators met.
