Scalps. To protect rural villages in Northern Mexico the Mexican government offered a bounty on the scalps of Apache raiders. Bounty hunters began slaughtering the population of entire Apache villages – as well as that of the rural Mexican villages the bounty was intended to protect. Some California-bound treasure seekers became scalp hunters to offset the cost of their trip.
