Sergeant William Carney was the first American-American to receive the Medal of Honor. The 23-year-old was with the 54th Massachusetts Regiment when it attacked Fort Walker during the Civil War. Although wounded in the head, chest, arm and leg, he carried the regiment’s national flag back to Union lines, preventing it from falling into Confederate hands.
