After Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna made himself a virtual dictator, the town of Gonzales was ordered to turn over the six-pound cannon lent to it by the Mexican government. The residents responded "Come and Take It," and on October 2, 1835, they repulsed a small Mexican force sent to seize the gun.
