Sir Arthur John Evans (1851-1941) became interested in the Minoan civilization and visited Heinrich Schliemann who was excavating Troy and Mycenae. He purchased a likely site in Crete where Minos Kalokairinos had uncovered two storerooms in 1878. Evans excavated the entire palace site and reconstructed some features. His discovery of thousands of clay tablets led to the identification of two Bronze Age scripts, dubbed Linear A and Linear B.
