John Wesley Powell. John Wesley Powell led an expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers, through the Grand Canyon even though he had lost the lower part of his right arm in the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War. Powell, a geographer and ethnologist, held a number of positions after resigning from the army in 1865, many for government agencies such as director of the U.S. Geographical Survey. He published the first complete classification and distribution map of native languages in the United States and Canada in 1891. He died in 1902.
