Massachusetts Bay Company. Massachusetts Bay Company`s 1629 charter was annulled in 1684 and–with Plymouth colony and Maine–was incorporated into the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691. About 1,000 puritans under the leadership of John Winthrop settled in Massachusetts in 1630, having received a charter the year before from King Charles to trade and colonize between the Charles and Merrimack rivers. The charter was annulled in 1684 and a royal government substituted until the new charter of 1691which merged the Plymouth colony, Maine and the former Massachusetts Bay Company into the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
