Jean Lafitte and his followers. In 1814, Andrew Jackson called the followers of French freebooter Jean Lafitte "hellish banditti." Jackson later revised his opinion and asked Lafitte to aid him against the British in the defense of New Orleans. Many of the 4,500 men behind Jackson’s entrenchments at New Orleans on January 8, 1815, were followers of Lafitte.
