Henry Wilson, a senator from Massachusetts, served in Grant?s second term (1873-1877). Colfax was an Indiana Radical Republican and Wilson had been a founder of the Free Soil Party and the Republican Party. Both Colfax and Wilson were alleged to be involved in the Credit Mobilier scandal in which prominent politicians accepted stock from a railroad construction company in exchange for political influence. Colfax?s political career was destroyed by the scandal.
