On October 17, 1974, in testimony before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Criminal Justice, President Gerald Ford said regarding his unconditional pardon of Richard Nixon for all federal crimes that he committed or may have committed or taken part in, "There was no deal, period.? Ford pardoned Nixon on September 8, 1974 and made an agreement recognizing Nixon?s title to Oval Office tape recordings and his ultimate right to destroy them. Nixon had resigned on August 9, 1974, after the House Judiciary Committee voted for three articles of impeachment.
