Ernesto "Che? Guevara, chief lieutenant in the Cuban revolution and active in other Latin American revolutionary movements, was born Ernesto Guevara de la Serna in Rosario, Argentina in 1928. ?Che? was a nickname meaning ?pal.? He played a leading role alongside Fidel Castro in the overthrow of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959, wrote the book Guerrilla Warfare in 1960 and, as Cuban Minister of Industries from 1961-?65, led the nationalization of industry and agriculture. He left Cuba in 1966 to lead a band of guerrillas in Bolivia, where he was tracked down and executed by the Bolivian army in 1967.
