First of all, I Do Not hate America and by that I'm sure you mean the U.S. since America is the whole continent. I am a born and bred Nyorker and I love the fact that I have grown up in what in my opinion is the most culturally diverse city in the world. I am proud of all the good things this great nation stands for but let’s not blind ourselves. They are not carried out in all situations. Second, my information comes from historical facts. Third, I in no way justify violence or feel in any way that the lives lost during that specific act are unimportant. Just like the many Puerto Rican lives that were lost during the years of protest are not unimportant. The officers reacted like anyone who is devoted to their country and loves their countrymen would. By protecting and defending by any means necessary. And I think that everyone on the face of the planet is entitled to feel the same way towards their mother land. Finally, before you post your reply do some research and educate yourself first but do so with an open mind. Otherwise it will be useless. The American government acted in an abusive way towards a small country that stood no chance against such a massive nation. Dr. Campos decided to take a stand, speak up, gather the people and educate them as to how imminent the extinction of our culture was. We were denied simple rights such as the right to gather, protest, the use of our flag. Women were being sterilized against their will or knowledge; people were being murdered without penalty or investigation. And Dr. Campos was a terrorist??? Seriously!? Did that specific group take it a bit too far by trying to kill the president? Indeed. But in their minds and hearts they were acting just as patriotic and heroic as those officers on that fateful day. By defending and protecting what they loved. I'm sure that since 9/11 any American can at least understand what if feels like to see your country, your freedom, and your most basic right which is to exist threaten, attacked. And what was our government and the general public's response? Not by adopting your motto "do it peacefully, no matter how long it takes" as you so eloquently put it. The difference is that we have the man power to take a stand. And do not get me wrong. I am as much against this war as I am of the fact that this group of Puerto Ricans was pushed for so long against a corner and felt violence was the only way.

@Alessa Lopez: Wow, so the article basically admits we discriminated against Puerto Ricans, implies that they had some justification in their cause, and didn't even mention much about the bravery of the officers who killed the would-be assassins, and somehow this paints American in a good light.

Oh, by the way, I don't know what conspiracy/HateAmerica sites you get your info from, but this is pretty much true. Albizu Campos advocated violence to free Puerto Rico. I'm sorry, but if you want your country freed, do it peacefully, no matter how long it takes. If you truly hate America so much, don't follow in our "violent uprising" footsteps.

I've been writing a paper on this event and the account of the shooting given here has some details that don't jive well with the other accounts of the event that I've read. Nothing big, but just enough to give the story a more patriotic and dishonest slant, which is kind of sad because the most honest story really shows the bravery of the defending officers.

see: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BTT/is_180_30/ai_n16034729/pg_3/?tag=artBody;col1

Plus, this article makes the assassins seem undoubtedly deranged. Sure, they made the dumb mistake of trying to kill the president of the United States (and a good one to boot), but the rhetoric used here is unnecessary. It makes Albizu Campos sound like some sort of cult leader, but never substantiates that.

Also, according to Wikipedia, Albizu Campos died a year after being released from jail in Puerto Rico. His death wasn't peaceful; he was suffering from radiation poisoning from experiments conducted by the Department of Energy. Mind you, this is what Wikipedia says. But at least Wikipedia has sources to back up their claims.

Are you for real. The good Doctor walks up to Blair House with murder on his mind and you call him a hero?

This is such bs but definitely the American way...change historical facts to make themselves look better...blame the victim in order to continue the abuse of power over weaker entities as they have always done and continue to do...Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos was nothing short of a hero and a martyr who lived to fight oppression and abuse and died for it at the hands of cowards simply because he dared to stand up and speak up...Puerto Rico will be free and the truth will be known...
