History is what it is, and although I am a direct decendent from the Martin family, there isn't a lot of difference in what the family was trying to do for co-exsisting with the Native Americans than todays missionaries. We as a people of the world, are always trying to help others, but sometimes in doing so, it seems over whelming or power hungry, or pushy, and nosey to some. What a wonderful world it would be if, everybody got along , but that's not going to happen, as there will always be greed, jealousy, ignorance, and survival of the fittest.
The Martin families were responsible for lasting relationships with the Native Americans, and exchanged many valuable ideas, tools, trades, foods etc. that have been learned and still use to this day, by both peoples.
Yes we suffered, and we caused, and we survived, but you wouldn't be here if these times and events hadn't happened, so let us learn from this, so as not to repeat the mistakes made by all involved.

There are lots of books and articles about this subject. You should read a few of them then write your report. If you have some questions resulting from your own work, maybe someone will help you No one will want to help you until you have done most of the work on your own. After all, that is why your teacher assigned this project to you.

I am the author of this essay and have covered the Powhatan side in numerous publications and a forthcoming book. The original title of this essay was "The Missing Women of Martin's Hundred," so the many complex causes of the 1622 attack--which involved far more than just territorial dispossession-- were not the focus and could not be included.

"Indians," while a misnomer, is the preferable, more precise term than "Native Americans" in historical scholarship, because other indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere prior to European colonization also fall into that category. The civil rights activists in AIM ("American Indian Movement") apparently had no qualms about adopting that term.

This is very much one sided. The Native Americans ( not Indians ) were attacked by the Whites first resulting in this act. The whites were taking land from the Natives in ways that today would seem almost like a genocide sort of view.

I am writing an essay on Pocahontas. Does anybody know what made the Powhatan Indians important? Anything you know about them will be very helpful. Thanks! :)
