Once they had suppressed the Japanese defending Iwo Jima, American soldiers with time on their hands turned to commemorating their lost comrades. The island?s soft volcanic rock proved easy to carve, and the troops used it to create many memorials around the island. The majority featured a Christian cross, and many included the message ?In God we trust.? Some were later removed to the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on the island.
