A blanket draped over his shoulders, Thomas O?Brien of Middleboro, Mass., huddles in the snow of the Ardennes to eat his dinner. A foot soldier in the 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division (an old Massachusetts National Guard unit), O?Brien took part in George S. Patton?s Third Army drive to relieve Bastogne in December 1944. Shortly after this famous photograph was taken, he was killed in action.
