Hundreds of thousands of soldiers were wounded during the Civil War, yet images depicting injured troops are few and far between. This unknown wounded Federal soldier, however, left us with a portrait of a patriot injured while fighting for his country. He is posed with his arm hung in a linen sling. The sleeve of his coat has been cut lengthwise to accommodate his injured arm and hangs loosely at his side. The coastal scene depicted in the background suggests he might have been wounded during an attack on one of the many Confederate coastal fortifications. Image Copyright Matthew Fleming.
