Your wrong Younger. Obviously you haven't seen Dan Daly's photo where on his left lapel is the Army's Distinguished Service Cross. Because the Marines were attached to the Army's 2nd Division all Marines were eligible for army medals of any kind including medals for valor.

There are many Marines that have received the DSC. The qualification is that they earned the award while assigned with an Army unit or the Marine Corps Unit is part of an Army campaign.

Major General Butler could be the model for John Wayne's many por-trayals--he is the real deal. With the name Smedley Darlington Butler he may have taken some ribbing, but, unlike General Grant, did not change his name.Grant's real name was Hiram Uriah Grant, with initials, HUG. He changed it to Ulysses Simpson, giving him initials U.S. for 'Unconditional Surrender.'
Butler did not take any ribbing seriously. A name is name (to mis-quote Shakepeare).

I am extremely proud that Sgt. Daly was my moms cousinhis medals were well deserved. His wartime accomplishments were amazing especially since he was only 5ft 6 inches 135pounds His picture proudly hangs in the main lobby of the northport VA hospital. Nov11 veterans day was sgt. Dalys birthday very fitting for such an honorable man. Rosemary

I'm researching Pvt. France Silva, USMC, MoH recipient at the Boxer Rebellion. My research is more than 4 years in the making. I hope to write a book about him. I know a lot about him and have posted several entries on the Internet.

Anyone having a photo of him - would be truly appreciated. Thank you!

Semper Fidelis!

NOS, Congratulations on being proud or your country and your training. You are wrong though, we do need people like this (heros). They are the ones that make this country great and give us ideals to live up to. If you didn't belive in these people, why did you take the time to do a report on them. I think you are just ticked that you got an F and frankly I can understand it with grammar like you use.

Hopefully to clear up any confusion on Daly's medals, he was recommended for a medal of honor at belleau woods, but that was down graded to a navy cross, he was also awarded the dsc by the army, the equivilant, because they were under army command. This was not Daly's third recommendation however, it was his fourth. He had been recommended for the MOH for his actions in Vera Cruz in 1914, but at the time the USMC was only awarding the MOH to officers, having reversed their earlier policy of only awarding enlisted. After Vera Cruz, the USMC came to a middle ground and Daly was again considered for the MOH for his actions in 1914.

Re comment No 4. The Medaille Militaire with the joint award of the Croix de Guerre with Gold Star (meaning Army level award) in the Great War and WWII equated to the VC or MoH, , for Adujutant de Chef, and subordinate ranks. To complicate it, officers of General of Brigade and above could also be awarded the same.
Officers, if awarded the Legion of Honour in the grades of Chevalier and above with the joint award of the Croix de Guerre with Gold Star, again equated to the VC or MoH.
The long defunct French Legion of Merit was purely a civil award.
In modern French awards the system is even more complex.
In regard to Daly receiving the Army's DSC, that is correct, the Marine Brigade being under Army command in France. And when on display in the USMC Commandant's office 30 odd years ago had it mounted in Daly's medal group.
