There is nothing more stimulating to me, nothing that generates more patriotism IN me, nothing that makes me swell with such pride, as stories such as these of our father's engaging in the battles of WWII as they strove to defeat the tyrants of that very pivotal time in human history. God bless them and my many thanks to them and all the men and women who stand the line.

Great story and well written. I flew F-100 Ds at RAF Woodbridge, 58-62. I was in the 79TFS but would you believe we sat alert 24/7 with a centerline nuke and 6 wing tanks. Disgusting

he North American Aviation P-51D fighter aircraft is a single-seat, low wing monoplane powered by a 12 cylinder V-1650-7 liquid cooled, Packard built Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The engine is equipped with a two-speed, two-stage supercharger and an automatic manifold pressure regulator. The engine spins a four blade Hamilton Standard Hydromatic constant speed propeller.

Great story about a Fighter Pilot and his mission. I came along in 53 and almost got to fly the 51, but it was canceled...at the time, I had finished training in the F-80A & F-84G, and on my way to England; Woodbridge AB, 20th FBW. Saw most all the bases that the bombers & fighters flew from, and talked to many English Fighter Pilots about the war years. A wonderful time.

It's not a Rolls Royce, it never was. Of 15,000 P-51s that left the factory in California and Texas, not one ever had a Rolls Royce engine. All P-51B, C, D, and Ks had Packard Merlin's. Pakard made more than 50,000 Merlin engines and were not the same exact engine as the Rolls Royce for Spitfires and Lancasters.
