Yes, I participated in the patrol. Because the man who
accidently killed Sparks refused to continue as our sole Thompson
Submachine Gun I was assigned to carry it on the patrol and as a
consequence was also assigned to man the point with the
assistance of two of Clemmens constabulary.
The swim for the pilot was no big deal but nevertheless the
Corps awarded me the Navy and Marine Corps Medal.

I just recently learned the name of the F4F pilot is Joseph L..Narr,
a marine lieutenant and an ACE credited with downing eight jap
planes. He was shot down and killed on Nov 11, about a month
after his rescue from the drink.

I participated in this raid. One of the most gut wrenching events in my experience during the Guadalcanal Campaign.

It was not the enemy that harrased us as much as the elements. Rain, Mud, and single filing in the Dark. When in gets dark, without a moon shining, you can't see your hand in front of your face. Most of this raid was moving into position at night. I remember crashing into the man in front of me several times. He was just short enough that ever time the column stopped I would blunder into his back hitting his steel helmet with my mouth.
The next morning my comrades thought I had been in a fight, and LOST.
