I would like to hear from any U.S. Coast Guard personnel that participated in Operation Torch in November, 1942, while assigned to the USS JOSEPH T. DICKMAN. Later this year, the U.S. Coast Guard will commission the Sentinel-class Cutter PAUL CLARK, which is named after Fireman First Class Paul Leaman Clark, who displayed extraordinary devotion to duty in the face of enemy fire during an assault that lasted from November 8-11, 1942 and was part of Operation Torch. For his heoric courage, Clark was awarded the Navy Cross.

Operation Torch proved to be important for the Allies in preparing them to work together and take on the Axis Military. This joint effort led by General Eisenhower prepared him to lead the Allies in Operation Overlord in Normandy. General Patton was able to confront the "Desert Fox" Field Marshall Rommel and learn tactics which would prove beneficial in Late 1944 and Early 1945. It is an interesting part of World War 2 to study and reflect upon. Thank God we had such Men to preserve the Freedoms we enjoy! God Bless America!

The toughest resistance during Operation Torch was not Algeria , but Fedala where the Third Infantry Division encountered heavy and protracted naval and aerial resistance in addition to Vichy artillery batteries and infantry units .

The Ninth Infantry Division assaulted Safi and Port Lyautey within 20 or so miles of Casablanca which was the ultimate objective.

This invasion force which invaded Safi, Fedala, and Port Lyautey sailed further to an amphibious landing than any other American invasion force in history, as they loaded-up in Virgina , leaving about October 24th , and then hitting the Morrocan beaches Sunday morning, November 8th. The Oran and Algeria group sailed from the UK

My grandfather was a coxswain operating one of the two remaining landing craft from the USS Charles Carroll. I didn't know much about this operation until reading this. I didn't realize his ship sent out 25 landing craft and that only 2 remained. I know he got a Citation and a promotion for his efforts in this operation. I've never been more proud of my grandfather. After this, he carried troops and supplies on D-Day on Omaha Beach. I'm so grateful he survived all of this.
