The dynamic of Stalin;s leadership lead to this unprecedented suffering. You were safe around him if he was told what pleased him...maybe How can ANY society or organization effectively operate with that type of leadership? Mosier also opens up another can of worms-the Russian belittling of the western allies lend lease and second front. Both helped level the playing field on the Eastern Front in 1943 onwards as much as the Red Army itself improved. Having only a miniscule motor vehicle industry that could only turn out copies of Ford Model As our trucks allowed the Soviets to sustain their great SUCCESSFUL offensives from 1944 onward. From the invasion of Sicily onwards, the force multipliers of the Wehrmacht-Luftwaffe. panzer and motorized units were drawn from the eastern front to face this new threat. Stalin might have dusted off the church icons, and evoked Holy Mother Russia to evoke his people to fight, but he drew the line at admitting that his bacon had been saved by the "tainted fruits of the oppressed workers from the decadent democracies.

Some years ago at an airshow I spoke to a former Luftwaffe fighter pilot, who got his 3 kills in 1945. When I asked him against what, he said I-16s. In 1945?? He told me that the Russians were puttiing anything into the air that could fly. At the very end they had impressed overrun Poles and Rumanians to fill their depleted ranks. Mosier's point was that Stalin had sucked the Soviet Union dry of it's manpower. In addition to the 30-40 million military and civilian dead in the Great Patriotic Struggle aka the War to Save Comrade Stalin at any cost, must also be added the millions from the forced collectivations, the Great Terror, other purges, the wholesale slaughter of the Soviet officer corps and the subsequent decimation of "traitors, slackers and cowards" in 1941-1942. Stalin didnt win via a mountain of Soviet dead, it was a mountain range of them
