Wargame Construction Set III: Age of Rifles, a DOS CD-ROM for $49.95 from SSI (800-601-7529), simulates warfare from 1846 to 1905. It covers a wide geographical and chronological field, including the American Civil War, Austro-Prussian War, Franco-Prussian War, Mexican-American War, Russo-Japanese War and colonial conflicts of the British Empire. Formations vary in size from company to regiment, depending on the scenario and player preferences. Detailed graphics and sounds add to the game but can be adjusted or turned off. Depending on the player, the game can run the gamut from a simple fighting game to a complex and detailed simulation that rivals any board or miniatures product. Also included is a relatively detailed gazetteer that chronicles the historical basis of the campaigns, scenarios and weapons involved. A powerful scenario editor allows players to design their own battles and campaigns.
