East Front, Windows 95 CD-ROM, Talonsoft, $54.95.

East Front, is a turn-based, platoon-level simulation of the Soviet-German conflict from 1941 to 1945. Play options include head-to-head, e-mail, modem and Internet.

This game is a masterpiece of multimedia programming. The graphics are detailed to the point that the screen resembles a miniature battlefield. Individual vehicles are easily distinguishable, and the terrain is equally well-done. The sounds of battle are also well-engineered and enhance the game experience. This high level of graphical detail does not impede game play, as scrolling around the map is quick and smooth. The map has several viewing options, including switching between 2-D and 3-D mode.

East Front’s game mechanics and historical detail are also strong components. An all-star design team has developed a thorough database of units, and the scenario and campaign selections are quite varied. Combat capabilities and results are in line with historical norms, and it is obvious that a lot of research has gone into this aspect of the game. East Front is intended to be played in the campaign mode, with players starting out as company commanders and receiving promotions based on performance. This mode provides more than just the challenge of combat, since players must work to preserve their core of veterans and choose the right mix of replacements and new equipment. A scenario generator also gives players the ability to create their own battles, which further enhances the game’s long-term value.

East Front’s control interface is not as intuitive as other games of its type, and the sparse instructions provided result in a relatively steep learning curve. The first-time computer wargamer may find the game a little overwhelming, but the experienced gamer or enthusiast of the period should welcome this addition to his or her collection.
