My uncle, Joseph M. Torzala was on the island of Morotai and told me the story about the Japanese airmen that destoryed three B-25s. He also mentioned how his body flew 150 feet into the air while he was stationed at his gun position. He was a lateral tracker and ran a 40 mm gun.

The explosion resulted in the severe damage of three B-25s and the deaths of three Japanese airmen whose body parts were scattered around the wreckage.

I found this article very interesting as I was on Morotai since well before December, 1944 and was unaware of the infantry fighting in the interior of the island. I was with the 785th AAA a/w Battalion which was stationed on the air strip. We had many strafing and bombing attacks by the Japanese. Damage to our aircraft on the field was not great but one incident I can relate entailed the destruction by. my gun crew, with 40 mm fire, of a twin engined Japanese aircraft. It exploded some 300 or so yards from our gunpit
