The ranges at Ft Stewart GA are named after CPL Red Cloud. I served with the 24th IN Division in Desert Storm and my wife's grandfather stood honor guard for the CPL's funeral. Now I know why the ranges are named for him. My father is about to be commissioned as the commander of the AM Legion post named for the CPL. An honor I know he feels.

I was in a tent on top of the hill with about 25 other guys when we heard the war hoop and the BAR bark from Cpl. Red Cloud. Over the years I have thought about Red Cloud and have good memories of him. He was my saving grace.

I have listened on audio, John McCain's book entitled "Why Courage Matters?" I was so intrigued with his summary of Pfc Mitchell Red Cloud Jr's heroism, that I had to BING the battle. As a partial Native american, and a retire vet, I am proud of his courage and the men that retook hill 123. we all need to develop a courage that, when needed, will be life saving and like changing. Thank you Mitchell Red Cloud. May your arrows and bowl of meal continue to sustain your hunting in the after life.

My Dad, Sgt. William Scruggs, fought in the same battle and claimed Red Cloud saved his life by holding off the enemy just long enough for them to escape and regroup. He told of being among those who recovered Red Cloud's body, still wrapped around the tree, with more than 100 dead Chinese just feet away.

He received The Distinquished Service Cross. He was a member of E company, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division.
